For its summer festivities, Steenvoorde thought big on Sunday. To welcome a renovated Belle Hélène, seventeen giants danced in the streets.
On Sunday in Steenvoorde, after the disappointing morning brocante where the few vendors set up near the church were repatriated to the Grand-place, Yves Debruyne, deputy for festivities, and his team wondered whether the crowds would be there in the afternoon. But a procession of giants is always a hit.
And so it was with the anniversary of La Belle Hélène. It's true that turning 25 is something to be celebrated with friends. There were plenty of spectators, and seventeen of the Giants turned up.
La Belle Hélène opened the procession in small groups, accompanied by a musical band. She was accompanied by Raoul de Godewaersvelde, Henri the customs officer and his dog, and the Steenvoorde brass band.
Rosalie, Jehan, le Caou and the Proven (B) band followed, then Sylvestre the minstrel and Totor with the Saint-Sylvestre-Cappel musical workshop; Fiacre the gardener, Jeannot the baker and La Peule with the Oudezeele band; Adolphine and Chope and Andréa and I'Zeph with the Caestre band and, finally, Jean-Charles, Guillem the smuggler and his dog, Joseph the carioteux and the Oye-Plage band.
Once on the Grand-place, each giant was introduced to the crowd, before La Belle Hélène disappeared into the former municipal workshops, giving the "new" Belle Hélène to make her appearance. She has the same costume, the same colors, blue eyes and black hair, but her chest is more pronounced and her head more feminine. To mark the occasion, the Steenvoorde brass band played the Marseillaise, and members of the Messager de la frontière released pigeons.
Once the presentation ceremony was over, a final rigodon rounded off the Ducasse communale festivities.
